Auckland, 5 October – Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management is keeping a close eye on rough weather heading our way. MetService has advised there is a high risk of thunderstorms bringing heavy rain and strong winds for the Auckland region tomorrow morning (Thursday) and late evening.
Auckland Council’s Head of Emergency Operations Aaron Davis says this comes on top of more than a week of rainy weather which has left the region saturated and vulnerable to slips. With soils already fully saturated there is chance of localised flooding and slips. Predicted strong wind gusts may cause structural damage, including affecting trees and power lines.
In anticipation of further wet weather, it pays ensure drains are clear and property that might be affected by storm damage is secure. “If out and about tomorrow, please drive to the conditions and take care on the roads, especially in slip prone areas,” says Mr Davis. “Added to all of this there is a low risk of small tornados. If you see a tornado or funnel forming, take shelter immediately and help alert others,” he says.

– Secure outdoor items
– Drive with caution and if possible, avoid low-lying coastal roads
– Ensure you are aware of low lying areas near you that could flood rapidly
– Report flooding to council on 09 301 0101
– Ensure a torch, radio and spare batteries are to hand.
