EASTER – a message from Counties Manukau Police

Manukau, 21 March – To be attributed to Constable Gurpreet Arora, South Asian Liaison Officer for Counties Manukau Police. Counties Manukau Police would like to wish you all a Happy Easter. We would also like to remind you to keep safe over this time. It is important that our community stay vigilant. Counties Manukau Police are constantly working with you to prevent crime from happening. Burglary is still a priority for us in the District, and by working together we will be able to tackle the problem. During holiday seasons, unoccupied homes are more prone to being targeted by burglars. This is simply because the occupants are more likely to be out and about and involved in festive events.
There are lots of things you can do to prevent your home being targeted, including:
* Storing cash, jewellery, spare keys and financial documents in a safe and secure place, like a safe, in an area of your home which is not easily accessed.
* Registering the serial numbers of valuable possessions online via the SNAP website (www.snap.org.nz) to ensure they can be traced in the event that they are ever stolen and recovered.
* Install an alarm system and fit sensor lights.
* Call 111 if you see anybody suspicious lurking around your home – burglars like to ‘case out’ a property before they actually commit a burglary.
* Keep your plants and hedges well trimmed so you don’t give burglars a place to hide.
* Keep doors and windows locked at all times while occupants are not present and don’t leave your garage door open, even if you are at home.
* If you are going away for a long period get a neighbor or friend to regularly check on your property, clear your letterbox and mow your lawns.
Police encourage all members of the public to join or start up a local Neighborhood Support Group. Get in touch with you local Police station if you would like more information about this. Remember to also stay safe on the roads.
