Auckland, Wednesday, 4 February (Counties Manukau) – Motorists are urged to take care on the roads as they drive through the District for Waitangi weekend, as Counties Manukau Police aim for another holiday weekend with zero road fatalities.
Road Policing Manager Inspector Alison Brand says “Operation One Piece” will get underway in Counties Manukau from 12pm on Thursday 5 November. The operation will work to prevent road trauma in the District over the holiday weekend, which is a time that is perceived to hold a higher crash risk than normal weekends.
“Police vehicles will be highly visible around the District this weekend in an effort to get people to slow down,” says Inspector Brand. “If you crash – regardless of the cause – speed is the single factor…… that most affects the outcome. Excessive speed leads to loss of control. It’s the difference between no injury, serious injury or death and we ask that our road users keep this in mind and make the right decision to lower their speed.”
“Additionally, every driver stopped by Police can expect to be breath tested, no matter the circumstances,” says Inspector Brand.
Over long weekends, fatigue is also considered a contributing factor and Police urge anyone hitting the road to make sure they have had enough rest and remain hydrated through their trip.
“We want all our drivers to remain alert this weekend and to avoid tragedy they must ensure they are aware of everything that is happening on the road around them,” says Inspector Brand. “Tired drivers are more likely to make mistakes.”
The year began with tragedy in the District, with one person losing her life on the Southern Motorway on New Year’s Day.
“We don’t want anyone to have to go through the tragedy of losing a loved one at any time of year.
Sometimes it’s as simple as wearing your seat belt or ensuring you do not get into a car with a driver who has been drinking.
“Our teams will be tasked to look for all driving offences this weekend, particularly speed, alcohol and failure to use appropriate restraints.”
Police will also be patrolling beaches around the District to promote water safety and prevent disorder in these public areas.
The official holiday period finishes at 6am Monday 8 February.
